Breast Augmentation the Recovery Process
Any surgical procedure involves some period of recuperation, and breast augmentation is no exception. While it is not as serious as say, major cancer surgery of the peritoneum, it may still be up to six months before you are fully healed and can return to your normal everyday activities.
Right After the Surgery
Once the anesthesia has worn off and you are wheeled out of the recovery room, you’ll need to go straight home and stay in bed for at least a day and preferably two. You may of course rise in order to use the toilet, but if you can take meals on a tray and keep to your bed as much as possible, it will help in the long term. You will probably feel some pain at this stage; this is completely normal. Your doctor will prescribe a safe and appropriate non-aspirin analgesic medication. Ice packs may also be helpful.
After Two Days
You can shower after forty-eight hours and resume light exercise (walking) the following day. Any strenuous exercise, particularly heavy lifting, should be avoided for at least two weeks. During this time, you may notice some bruising and swelling. Again, this is normal and no cause for concern. The tops of your breasts may also be rounded, and you may even see some differences between the two. This will resolve itself as the implants settle into place. Normally, dissolving sutures are used for the incision, and will be gone by the end of the second week.
After The Second Week
At this point, you may resume aerobic exercise as long as no lifting is involved. If you engage in strength training, you may start easing back into your routine after a month has passed; your doctor will recommend any type of sports bra or other support that may be desirable.
During the later part of the recovery process, you’ll want to massage your implants periodically as your doctor suggests. This helps to keep your breasts soft and supple and reduce the formation of scar tissue in the vicinity of the implant. Over time, you’ll see your breasts start to regain a natural shape as the implants continue to settle into place.
In the meantime, you should plan on at least two follow-up visits and examinations by your doctor at three weeks and again at twelve weeks following your breast augmentation surgery.
