Cuban artistry is an assorted multiethnic coalescence of African, European and North American visual design reflecting the distinct population make-up of the island. Cuban artisans adopted European modernism and the 1920-1930 era saw an increase in Cuban vanguardism movements; these trends were identified by a variety of contemporary esthetic genres. Legendary Cuban artists tended to come from the earlier 1900s.

It’s been argued that the most legendary piece of art to be produced in the island of Cuba was THAT photograph of a certain Che Guevara (photo by Alberto Korda) which ended up being arguably one of the most noted images of the 20th century.

The local Cuban art cause amassed momentum after the opening of San Alejandro academy in 1818, which was developed to fulfil the European preference of the middle class population of Cuba. Towards the end of the 1800s, landscapes were very popular within the Cuban art movement and classicalism prevailed as the main art style.

Even So, the Vanguardia Cuban contemporary artist of the late 1920s had scorned the theoretical rules of Cuba’s national art academy. In their early years, many artists had resided in France, where they learned and assimilated the fundamentals of modernist primitivism, surrealism, and cubism. They returned to Cuba dedicated to new artistic styles and were keen to integrate this new artistic persuasion with a Cuban twist. The vanguardia artists accomplished world acclaim back in 2003 when the Museum of Modern Art displayed the the Modern Cuban Painting show.

The importance of antique silver can be realized in many different arenas. From silver spoons to old and perhaps rare coins, there’s silver out there for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a few pieces to have on hand or if you would like to start up a whole collection. Finding the right and reputable dealers goes a long way towards the purchase of quality silver.

If you’re a novice collector there are a few things to consider before you start shopping. Take a quick peek at the internet or some nearby antique stores to see if there is a certain pattern that you like or an era that you find yourself gravitating towards. Once you have this step down you can move on to the purchasing of silver.

Now, you probably have in mind which type of silver you like the best. One thing, above all, that you should be aware of is forgeries. Antique asparagus servers seem to be an appealing market for fakes. Another item which shows up as a forgery is salt spoons. With internet antique dealers, it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between what is real and what isn’t. On the other hand, the web can be a vast resource of information about how to spot a fake along with reputable rare findings. The best thing to do: pay attention and learn as much as you can.

You can create a different appeal if you don’t buy the same item over and over again. By putting together different pieces, you’ll cut down on the cost and you will have an interesting array of silver pieces for when guests come over.

One way in which you can make the most of your antique silver experience is to focus on the investment value of the pieces you wish to purchase. By utilizing good investment strategies, you may find yourself with silver that will be worth money and will look good at the same time.

Perhaps you will wind up collecting plates or maybe old serving dishes will be more to your liking. Silver teapots and tea cups are all available on the antique market. In the end, it’s all about personal choice when deciding which piece of silver you like the most.

All of us often wonder how the most common commodity used by us everday – soap is manufactured. It was in the 19th century that commercial production of soap began with the discovery of basic chemicals that could be used in bulk to mass produce cakes of soap.

The whole concept of making soap is quite simple. All it takes is a mixture of caustic soda and any oil like coconut oil to produce a cake of soap. The actual process of course needs to be controlled and monitored to produce soap that is usable.

The basic concept in soap making is that caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, called “lye”) reacts with both oils and fats to make soap. This is called saponification.

There are three basic methods of making soap. When made at home, these cakes are rich in glycerin. Industrial processes remove the excess glycerin.

Cold Process Soap
This is the grandmother’s soap recipe. The art of soap making involves using the right proportion of basic ingredients – lye (sodium hydroxide) and water with fatty acids. Approximate time for this is 6 weeks.
Cold process soap is normally hard and long lasting.

Melt and Pour Soap
The easiest and safest way to make soap at home is to buy melt and pour kits. As the name suggests, the various ingredients need to be melted and mixed in the prescribed proportions. Various colors, fragrances and other ingredients can be added as well.

Hot Process Soap Making
This is as simple as mixing all the ingredients and placing them in a container and then heated up to evaporate water and leave the soap solution behind. This cools off to become soap.

It is unbelievable when one says, yeah, I collect comic
books, what the general public response might be? Oh no, a
slightly off the wall geek. Here is someone who has lost
touch with reality. Or someone that is in his or her own
little world. I think not. Yes, comic book collectors may
sometimes march to the beat of a different drummer, but who
says we all have to be cut from the same mold. Comic books
are big business.

Back in the days of my youth (what, several millennia
ago?), I loved reading comic books. And so did a lot of my
friends. Whenever we had an extra dime or sometimes a
quarter, we could run up to the local small town grocery
and spend some very happy times at the comic book rack.

We would even go out and find small odds jobs for pocket
change, which was enough then to purchase 2 or 3 good
flights of adventure and fantasy. I can even remember
crawling under our house to retrieve a cat that had the
misfortune of dying there. My Dad couldn’t stomach the
smell and enticed my friend and I to accomplish the chore
for ample pocket change. We braved the spiders and other
crawly creatures to retrieve and bury the unfortunate cat.
Not long after that, we were the proud owners of yet,
several more intriguing comic books. Even the local bully
(who was really a pretty good guy) would purchase our worn
out or unwanted magazines for far more than they were
worth, so we could purchase new ones.

I didn’t know much about collecting then. I just liked
saving what I enjoyed. I had a large cardboard box that I
kept under my bed, filled with all my little treasures. I
didn’t realize that I had the beginnings of what could have
been something very lucrative. In later years when I headed
off to college, I dragged my large cardboard box with me.
At one point in time, I left most of my belongings in the
charge of what I thought were trusted friends. When I
returned from my forest firefighting adventures, my box
full of magazines were no where to be found. And needless
to say, were my trusted friends either. Others had seen the
value in what I had and wanted it for themselves. Oh well,
live and learn. That limited collection of comic books and
other magazines would have been worth a small fortune today.

Are there big bucks in the comic book genre? Just look at
what Hollywood has been up to for the last few decades. As
far as I can tell, the really big blockbusters started back
in 1978 with the release of Superman, The Movie. And since
then there has been comic book hero after comic book hero
to hit the silver screen. And they all make tons of money.
The Hollywood moguls may or may not be “into” the genre,
but they can smell large profits. And these kinds of
profits aren’t harvested from a small out of touch with
reality niche. It take large numbers of individuals forking
out 5 to 10 dollars a pop, to accumulate the astronomical
profits that Hollywood is seeing these days. Made up bu
individuals who may or may not want to admit their avid
interest in comic book characters. I will stand up and say,
I enjoy watching these movies and have even started my own
collection of comic book character DVDs. Who knows, maybe
some day my DVDs will become as valuable as comic books.
Probably not.

Although, not every individual’s collection has magazines
worth thousands of dollars, there are a sizable amount of
collections that can be worth hundreds of thousands or even
millions of dollars. These are not people that have lost
touch with reality. A while back, the actor, Nicholas Cage,
put his comic book collection of about 400 magazines up for
auction. Word was that he might have realized a value into
seven figures. That ain’t chicken feed.

It is not uncommon for single additions to be worth several
hundred to several thousand dollars. Some comic books can
enter the realm of several hundred thousand dollars for one
magazine. Now the owners have to be some pretty rich
economically savvy geeks. Are these the types of small
niche individuals who have lost touch with reality or don’t
want to confess they like comic books? So the next time
you hear someone profess, yeah I collect comic books, you
may want to look inside yourself and say, how do I release
my hidden passion and start collecting myself?

Now that you know this, isn’t it about time you start a
comic book collection for yourself? It is fairly simple,
but there are several things to take into consideration. To
get started on the right step, I am accumulating some of
the best information on the Net about comic book
collecting. Come on over and satisfy your curiosity.

This is a fun craft to do with a group of moms and their kids, one child per adult works the best. Each mom will need:
—One soft brush, any size but 1/2″ works the best
—One tiny 1-ounce jar of “One-Stroke Ceramic underglaze”, either Duncan E-Z Stroke or Gare One-Stroke. (Of course they can share these, but it’s best if they have at least 3 colors to choose from. The best are a dark green, a dark blue or a dark brown. One jar of each color will do 50 hands altogether)
—One pint jar of “clear gloss glaze”, which all can use.
—A sponge
—Paper towels and a washcloth
—One blank UNglazed ceramic tile, 4-1/4″ (for kids 2 or 3 yrs. old or so) or 6″ (for kids over 3) Unless you know someone who does hand-painted tile as a career, these would have to be ordered in cases of 100 or so. The best thing is to call the hobby ceramic stores, where you will get the underglaze and clear glaze, and ask if they have a “molded greenware or bisque tile they sell”, and order the quantity you need. Tell them you would like them “fired to bisque.”

The most important thing is that the childrens’ hands are scrubbed with soap and water, then dried well. Salt, sugar or oils on the hands will prevent the glaze from bonding with the tile. Make sure to wipe the tile well with a clean sponge in plain water. Allow to dry a few minutes.

Tell the kids that it is like hand-painting only without wiggling their fingers. Make it fun, some get scared. Hold their clean hand gently over a tile to make sure their hand will fit, fingers spread out a little. Pick the right size tile and paint one wet coat of glaze across the flat of their open palm, not too runny but not too dry, follwing the instructions for mixing on the bottle. Try to keep their fingers from touching, the more still they keep their hand, the better the clarity. A good print will show fingerprints! But if it smears, it usually does, it’s all for fun anyway. If it starts to become a battle with the child, let him go, when he sees the other kids having a good time he will offer his hand to be painted. (I say “he” because it is usually the boys that wimp out, the girls are more adventurous. lol)

Make sure the paint goes all the way to the ends of the fingers and thumb and press the hand straight down onto the surface of the tile, quickly but gently and firmly, rolling the fingers slightly so the print doesnt look like skeleton fingers lol. Lift the hand straight up and see how cool! Wash their hands with soap, the paint is water soluable and non-staining, but dont let them lick it. With a fine brush, write the child’s name and date or birthday or age right on the tile. Set it in a safe place to dry well.

If you are nervous about smearing the dry glaze, have them fired at “cone 04″ before painting the clear gloss on top. This is the proper way, but if the underglaze is good and dry and you are very careful, it is ok to put the clear glaze on unfired underglaze and fire the tile once at “cone 06″ and the results will be the same. Either way, get the large floppy brush again and paint 3 thin coats of clear gloss on the tile and fire to “cone 06″.

You can buy frames from most ceramic stores that sell the tiles. They will last forever. Have fun!

I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. All knitting instructions use basically two stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Once you know these two knitting essentials you will be able to follow most knitting instructions which are just combinations or variations of these two stitches.

Knitting Instructions for the Knit Stitch

Once you have cast on, hold the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Push the point of the right knitting needle in between the front of the first and second stitches, pointing the knitting needle to the right to feed the point through the first stitch keeping it under the left needle. The knitting yarn should be at the back of the work. Loop the knitting yarn around the right knitting needle from back to front, letting the knitting yarn rest between the needles. Catch the knitting yarn on the end on the right knitting needle and pull it through the first stitch to the front of the work. Slip the old stitch off the left needle. The new stitch is now on the right needle. Now you are getting the hang of the knitting instructions. It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too. Repeat this process until all stitches are on the right knitting needle. Now count the stitches, if they are all there, turn the right knitting needle around and put it in the left hand. This is the first row. The knitting yarn will look like it is at the front and you will now take it to the back and start the second row of transferring stitches to the empty right needle.

Knitting Instructions for the Purl Stitch

The Purl stitch will also be in any knitting instructions. Start with the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Your knitting yarn will be hanging in front. Push point of right knitting needle into the front of the first stitch from right to left. Wrap the knitting yarn around the tip of the right knitting needle, crossing over the two needles and hanging once again in front. Slide the right knitting needle down and back taking the new loop of knitting yarn from front to back, through the old stitch. Slip the old stitch off the left knitting needle. If you have followed the knitting instructions you now have a stitch in purl on the right knitting needle and the yarn is hanging, once again, in the front. Repeat this process until all stitches are on the right knitting needle. Now count the stitches to make sure you haven’t dropped any and turn the work around putting the knitting needle with the stitches on in your left hand to start the next row.

I hope you could follow my knitting instructions. This is my version of instructions for the two basic knitting stitches but I have found that it is hard to use a few written instructions. I have found a great book on the subject, much more in depth than I can be. It really helped me improve my knitting with advice on free knitting patterns, knitting instructions, all the knitting essentials. You can find it on my blog called Knitting Instructions. I really suggest you take a look.
Good luck with your knitting.
