RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is the talk around the net these days because of its many benefits. However many people are not really clear exactly what RSS is?
Here is a definition of what RSS(Real Simple Syndication) “IS” in plain English for those of you who are NEW to it and for those of you who are still a little bit confused about it and its uses.

RSS is an Acronym. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary”. RSS content is delivered through RSS feeds. These are simple files structured in a specific way. [A type of xml] The XML file is the format used for distributing YOUR news headlines via the Web, which is known as “Syndication”.

RSS files (which are also called RSS feeds or channels) simply contain a list of items. Usually, each item contains a title, summary, and a link to a URL. RSS files look a lot like HTML code. . It is up to the user to use this information in any way that he wants.

“RSS” is simply a technology that distributes YOUR information (whatever it might be — ex. Articles, Special Offers, Product Reviews, Resource Announcements) by syndicating it across the net.

An RSS Feed is the way that your information or content can be delivered instantly to the desktop of a subscriber, by passing email and email filters.

This “Syndication” is where the TRUE power of RSS is unleashed, getting your message or information across the web in an INSTANT to websites, your subscribers and/or readers.

There are 2 main components of a RSS feed.

•	Channel: A channel is the total collection of items you wish to highlight in your site. There is exactly one channel per RSS file.

•	Item: Item is a single thing you wish to highlight from your site. There is at least one, but no more than 15 items per channel. But it is better to limit to 6 items per channel.

For example – you may create a RSS feed about all articles on your web site. That is, articles covering different topics in one RSS feed.

Then the channel will contain information about the feed (“Read articles on various subjects”), the location (web site address or URL) and a short description of the content you have written about.

There will be multiple items in the RSS Feed. Each item will have information about one article (the title, author, category, short description and the URL where the article may be found).

In general, anything that you publish frequently can be offered as an RSS feed.

Soon, you will find online retailers and other catalog companies also offering RSS feeds of their product range.

To increase your web presence, promote your online business, and increase web traffic
you should invest in providing an RSS feed for your blog or website . In this way you will be able to distribute your information to a vast and fast-growing community of users, who are more interested in knowing about your topic. In general, people who write articles or publish newsletters benefit the most. Most blog software allows you to offer RSS feed of the blog posts. You can also offer your press releases through an RSS feed.

Once you have set up your RSS feed you need to submit it to the many RSS feed Directories and submission site available to increase your exposure. Good examples of these are FeedForAll and Technorati. Do a search for RSS submission sites in a search engine and you will find many places to gain great exposure for your RSS feeds.

It is important to submit your RSS feeds to as many submission sites as possible. To do this manually is quite time consuming and labour intensive. I would recommend automating this process investing in RSS submission software such as RSS Announcer.

It is worthwhile looking seriously at RSS technology as it is an impressive tool to use to significantly benefit you in your internet marketing and website exposure.

There is little argument from webmasters and publishers that RSS brings in traffic. So once you’ve made the leap and created a feed, how do you tell your visitors about the feed?

1. Submit Your RSS Feed to RSS Directories.

This will not only increase the number of sites linking to your website and increasing your link popularity, it will also increase the RSS feeds profile. A number of RSS search engines and RSS directories exist that allow you to freely submit RSS feeds. Feeds are generally categorized and grouped together by subject. Web surfers looking for RSS feeds about a specific subject will often search the RSS directories, to locate a feed that matches their specific criteria. Topic specific RSS feed and podcasting directories are also emerging. Choose a web feed’s category carefully and only submit relevant feeds to topic specific directories.

A large list of directories is located at http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-submission.htm

Example of Topic Specific – http://www.realty-feeds.net or http://www.religious-podcasts.net

2. Explain RSS

While you have finally figured RSS out, some of your visitors may not have. The concept while brilliant, can be a bit confusing for the beginner. The concept of RSS feeds might be completely new to some of your website visitors. Hence it is generally good practice to walk website visitors through the steps of locating, subscribing and reading an RSS feed. It is generally a good practice to include a page on your website that contains a general explanation on RSS and details how website visitors can subscribe to an RSS feed.

Sample explanation page that can be used to on your website: http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-subscriptions.htm RSS specifications has authorized the replication of this webpage. It can be republished, simply insert your RSS feeds or otherwise customize the material to explain RSS to your website visitors.

3. Graphic on Website

Since the conception of RSS, bright graphic flags have been used to denote the location of an RSS feed. Now instinctively, website visitors frequently look for a colorful flag on websites. The looks of the flags have changed but a variety of options exists. When you add the image, be sure to link to the location of the RSS feed. Some webmasters use chicklets to indicate the presence of feeds, web surfers click on the chicklet that relates to their RSS feed reader or news aggregator and the feed is added to their list of feeds. Others feel that the volume of chicklets simply add confusion, and opt for a single relevant RSS graphic.

4. Press

As with any important addition to your company, it is completely appropriate to send a press release to let the media know you have RSS feeds available for specific content. This will often garner a little attention. Additionally, key news editors may opt to subscribe to your RSS feed in order to stay abreast of your latest corporate news. Considering the possibility of these subscriptions, makes a press release to signal the availability of an RSS feed simple common corporate sense.

5. Newsletters

Include a mention in your e-mail newsletter that content is now available via an RSS feed. Many newsletters subscribers appreciate an alternative subscription method and will subscribe to a web feed as well.

6. Auto Discovery

Some of your website visitors might be web savvy. Be sure to include an auto-discovery tag in the HTML header of each web page. Many RSS Readers will automatically discover that an RSS feed is available for specific content and notify the website visitor and ask them if they wish to subscribe.

7. Brand a Newsreader

Distribute pre-loaded RSS readers branded to your company name. The big benefit to brandable newsreaders is that you can include all of your RSS feeds in it. Any downloaders will have immediate access to your RSS feeds in the branded news reader.

Brandable Readers – http://www.deskshare.com or http://www.customreader.com

8. Blog

If you have a blog or know bloggers, be sure to share with them that you have added an RSS feed for specific content. Blogs are a great vehicle to spread the word. Marketers instantly understood the power of word of mouth, but few marketers understand the movement of blog to mouth. This growing phenomenon has added credibility to online blog endorsements.

In order to reap the benefits of an RSS feed, it is important the feed be properly publicized. Taking simple steps to promote an RSS feed will go a long way in ensuring a feeds adoption.

Not to long ago I finally decided to check out what all those little orange buttons that said “RSS” or “XML” were about. It seemed to me that either my vision was permanently impaired or every web-site I visited suddenly spouted an RSS tag, and that proudly. I wanted to know just what those ubiquitous orange buttons meant and how they operated.

Well, in a few days I was an RSS freak. Obsessed. Totally grounded in RSS mania and those little news items coming across my reader. Of course, I had a reader for my desktop, and a reader that conveniently placed itself within my Firefox Browser. I was RSS ready for anything! And you know what. BEST OF ALL its almost ALL FREE. (If it isn’t it does not find a place on my computer!)

For those among the plebeians of the world who are not familiar with RSS and what you can do with it, this article will attempt to explain the basics in RSS terminology and how you can become as obsessed with RSS as I am. In a future article I will attempt to explain how to create your own RSS feed as well.

RSS Feed – The information that a web site will place within the RSS file for you to read is known as a “feed”.
RSS Reader – The software you use, either browser based or desktop based that you use to pick up the feed and read it.

1. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” or so they tell us. Well so we don’t get too complicated, RSS has gone through a few permutations based upon its versions and maturing.

Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)

RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0.0)

Most RSS feeds today are of the 2.0 permutation. And actually all RSS and its permutations are based upon “push technology” which began to be seriously developed a few years ago.

2. RSS is based on XML (Extensible Markup Language) which is actually become incredibly popular in the development of web pages and the like. (For now we will not enter too many technicalities in programming)

3. PodCasting – is a derivation of RSS where audio is pushed to the computer instead of just text.

4. VodCasting – is a derivation of RSS where video is pushed to the computer instead of just text.

5. There are also PictureCasting, screencasting… and I guess you are getting the picture.

6. Atom Feeds – This basically is a new syndication to replace RSS format. Whether or not it will work is up to the developers and users.

7. Blogs, (a term which originally came from “weblog”) which has been all the rage in the internet lately, make extensive use of RSS feeds, pushing the information contained in the millions of weblogs out to users.

So what is so great about RSS? It simply is a way of those who have content, say a newspaper, where news changes and is updated on an hourly or daily basis, to push this news to users all over the world without them logging into the web site. The user has an “RSS Reader” (many different types are available – future article) and this news is updated automatically in the Reader on a schedule the user chooses. Thus one can be working without the need to constantly check a news web site, and still keep abrest of any news that is happening “out in the big world”.

Readers can handle many RSS feeds together, and it takes just a glance over to determine if something you are interested in comes through.

Why do web sites and companies do this? Because it creates customer loyalty. It is another avenue of being constantly connected with the customers and viewers of their web sites. It is a way to keep the people coming back and back again.

In the next article of this series I will discuss the method by which a feed is created and then pushed out to the Net world at large for others to read it.

Identity theft could happen to anyone. Someone gets hold of important information, such as your name, credit card information and social security number and uses this to make online purchases or apply for additional credit cards. The source of the information could be a “phishing” e-mail you replied to, stolen mail or one of many other ways.

At first you are probably going to be stunned when you receive that call from a credit rating company or collection agency, but you have to get over your shock and act quickly.

Step number one should be to contact your local police department and report the identity theft. At this point you should ask whether the police department has an information package or website with information on how to deal with identity theft.

If that is not the case, you can use some of the following resources to help you in the arduous process of clearing your good name and credit:

None of this will make the process easier or less painful, but at least now you have some tools to work with.

Do you think there is a difference between someone who writes
a fiction manuscript and someone else who authors their own
instruction, self-help or “how to” book?

This is an interesting question I’ve asked to many of my
book coaching clients, subscribers and customers for our
“Ultimate Information Entrepreneur’s Success Package”

In some cases, people answer no. They don’t feel there is
any difference. A writer is a writer is a writer.

In other cases, I get a firm “YES”, there are differences.
Problem is, its sometimes challenging to understand what that
difference really is.

If you understand this one difference between fiction writers
and non-fiction writers – you will never struggle with your
infoproduct business again!

The answer is that there is a very BIG difference, especially
between highly successful writers in both fields.

You may have a few great ideas you want to write about.

There is a hungry market just waiting for product like yours,
but you freeze when it comes to knowing how to organize,
structure and write a product that will sell?

But you get stuck because…

You Are Trying To Write A Story Instead Of
Organizing Information

Let me ask you, would it be easier for you to answer 10 questions
about a topic, where the information is often available and the
question is well understood?

Or, would it be easier for you to come up with 20 pages of a written
story on your chosen topic?

To be honest, the second option scares crap out of me, and would
most people.

Sitting down and crafting characters, a plot, chronological order of
messages, what to say on the 10th page, 15th page is an extremely
painful and lengthy task.

Fiction authors take months (sometimes years) and a gazillion rewrites
to work this into a format that is even close to being readable. Even
then, less than 5% ever get their work looked at by a publisher.

Instead, writing in response to what your market wants to know is
a task ANYONE can accomplish.

You do it everyday!

An interesting exercise to follow is to actually make note of how many
questions you get asked and provide answers for in one day. I’m betting
it is at least 10 – and if you have kids, a wife and a job – you are
more likely in the range of 30-40.

Answer 30-40 questions on a given topic will give you close to half a
book.

Answering a typical question in written form takes 2/3-1 page – answer
40 questions and you have close to half an 80-page book.

Your job is to…

Organize Your Market’s Questions Into A Logical
Set Of Answers

Did you see the word writing in that description?

No, because writing is simply a method of communication.

What you will sell are organized answers to your market’s most pressing
concerns, challenges and desires.

You could answer them verbally in audio products, through a tool in
software, through the written word in written products, or through
visual descriptions using video.

If your obstacle to turning your ideas into hot selling products is
writing – then forget writing – become an information organizer.

What a great career description – “Information Organizer”. Isn’t that
a lot less scary than “author”?

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America! Over 12.7 percent of Americans reported they were victims of Identity Theft in the last five years! The misuse of existing credit card accounts has increased to over 71 percent in the last two years. Over all, Identity Theft has increased over 41 percent in the same period.

Identity Theft is a massive crime and it is virtually without risk. Unbelievably, only 25 percent of Identity Theft victims report this crime to the police.

In 2002, estimated financial losses to American businesses were over $33 billion dollars. The average victim lost over $10,200.00, and that does not begin to include the cost needed to recover from the abuse. On average a victim needed over 30 hours to recover from the theft. Significantly, the sooner the theft was discovered, the less the monetary damage and the quicker the recovery.

Overall, the amount of time needed for resolution increased as the length of time required for discovery increased. Seventy-six percent of the victims who discovered the theft within one month took less than 10 hours to resolve the issue. When the theft was discovered between one and five months only 59 percent were able to resolve the problem within ten hours. For those that discovered the theft more than six months after the event, less than 20 percent were able to reach a resolution in less than 10 hours.

Clearly, time is a critical component in protecting yourself and recovering from Identity Theft. Quick discovery can help reduce the amount of monetary damage AND the number of problems you may encounter when attempting to clean up the resulting mess!

Identity theft is more like a family of crimes. It takes several different forms.

New Account Fraud -

The most common form of Identity Theft is when the criminal obtains your personal information and uses it to obtain credit in your name.

Existing Account Fraud -

The second category concerns misuse of existing accounts. Again, the same documentation needed to open new accounts can be used to access the victim’s current accounts

Child Identity Fraud -

In this instance, a thief steals the identity of a child. Here is the catch with this one. You or your child may not know about the theft until they grow up and get out on their own! The thief can have almost twenty years to destroy the child’s name. Luckily, this is easy to clean up. Not even your credit company is going to believe a three year old applied for a loan to buy a car!

Deceased Persons Fraud -

This one can be almost as insidious as Child Identity Theft. Why, because who is going to complain! Here the thief steals the identity of a recently deceased person. With no one to complain, how long it can go on.

Work Place Identity Theft -

Here things get a little tricky. This type of identity theft can happen whether or not you know the assailant. In its simplest form, someone at your work steals your personal information and then your identity. That is bad enough, but what about someone stealing the information you entrust with a company?

Immigration Fraud -

Identity Theft is a problem on the immigration front also. Illegal aliens often attempt to use stolen or falsified documentation to enter the country. Your documentation can be used to establish the illegal immigrant’s right to work, in the United States.

Criminal Record Fraud -

The last type of Identity Theft is perhaps the most damaging! In this instance, the thief uses your information to leave you with a criminal record!

Imagine being pulled over for a speeding ticket only to find out you had several warrants out for your arrest!

How do you prevent Identity Theft? You prevent it by being proactive! Check your credit reports at least yearly! Check Equifax, Experian and Trans Union.

Equifax: (800) 525-6285
Experian: (800) 301-7195
Trans Union: (800) 680-7289

Be careful of how you dispose of your old mail. Utility bills Phone bills, school papers and many other items can give an identity thief all the ammunition needed to steal your life.

Pay attention to mail that you receive or do not receive, if you suddenly stop getting your credit card bill call the company and find out why. Your mailing address may have been changed without you knowing about it.

Identity theft can ruin your life if left undiscovered. Counter this by actively monitoring your credit and other accounts. Like other criminals, these thieves look for victims. People who proactively look after themselves and their families are seldom mistaken for victims.

Before you do anything else, call all three of the numbers listed above and order a copy of your credit report. Do it, right now!

The temptation among internet marketers to SPAM is greater than ever. By now, most people know that SPAM isn’t the popular food from Hormel but a pseudonym for “unsolicited commercial email,” also known as UCE.

SPAM is a definite no-no. It’s also the quickest way to destroy your online reputation.

Unlike conventional mail, unsolicited email can provoke a hostile, negative, and destructive reaction. There are individuals on the Web who will contact your Internet Service Provider, harass you, “bomb” your server with countless emails and do everything possible to either shut you down or generally make your online life miserable.

There have been instances where marketers have sent SPAM to recipients with great results. The benefits are only short-term, however.

“Netiquette” allows for the selective transmission of emails to recipients who have expressed an interest in specific subjects or topics related to what you offer because they have “opted-in” to an email directory or source.

Purchasing email addresses from an “opt-in” source is considered to be acceptable but should still be approached carefully. Make sure the lists are up to date, highly qualified and originate from a “double opt-in source.”.

There are other methods available that are appropriate to the Internet and do not risk the wrath of SPAM. Banner advertising and ads on ezines, or electronic magazines or newsletters, are cost-effective and highly targetted.

Identity Theft profoundly affects one in every four people this year. 25% of the population will experience some form of Identity Theft, and how many of them will have the financial resources to correct it, or even the knowledge that their identity has been stolen?

Identity Theft can ruin your credit. It can steal away your career. Identity Theft can make you a criminal. So, what can you do to protect yourself?

Protect Your Identity

	Keep track of your wallet
Manage your financial assets in person
Don’t give out your financial or identifying information without knowing the person you are giving them to
NEVER sign up for a new service over the phone – when they called you
Research all business contacts for quality and identification

Maintain Your Identity

Check your credit reports frequently for errors
Verify numbers on everything
Keep copies of all documents
Immediately report any lost wallets or theft
Shred ALL identifying documents before trashing them

Restore Your Identity

Contact all credit reporting agencies to announce there’s a problem
Write letters to correct any issues
Keep copies of all important documents in a safe place
Contact legal authorities immediately when you suspect a problem

There are currently a variety of companies available who offer to protect your identity for you. Many of these are high quality, highly recommended companies with a track record of being reputable. However, as with any service, they are not nearly as affected, as you will be if your Identity is stolen. Protect yourself. Never leave your own personal identity to someone else to protect entirely, it is of far less consequence to them than it is to you if YOU slip through the cracks.
