European Countries to Free up Spectrum by March 2010
The mobile broadband sector in the whole of Europe has got a breakthrough as the European Union has decided to open up the 900 MHz GSM spectrum and allow its use for advanced data services. The process for this started as the consent was given by the GSM Directive.
This has been called a revolutionary step by many. Viviane Reding, the Information and Media Commissioner for the EU, who was one of the people arguing for it for long, has commented that this will lead to development of new generation of technologies, allowing Europe to become a world leader in this field.

While no legislation has yet been passed, the proposal has met the approval of the Council of Ministers of the EU. Currently undergoing the mandatory documentation, the legislation will be drafted and made public by the end of September of this year. After that, the members of the EU will be given 6 months to take action, which means that they will be required to free up the mobile spectrum by the end of March 2010.
