Mew Choo, Chong Wei, Make it to 1st Mini Olympics Finals
Malaysian shuttlers Wong Mew Choo and Datuk Lee Chong Wei both reached the women’s and men’s finals respectively in the first Mini Olympics badminton tournament at the Bukit Kiara Sports Centre.
Both top seed players, Mew Choo and Chong Wei reached the finals very easily as their opponents in the quarter-final and semi-final rounds were less prominent with their Yonex badminton racquets.
In the men’s singles, Chong Wei hammered Mohd Roslin Hashim in a 20-minute quarter-final match, 21-15, 21-9. In the semi-final round, Chong Wei outdid World Number 30 Sairul Amar Ayob in straight sets, 21-15, 21-15.
Chong Wei is a Malaysian ace player who is a Beijing Olympics silver medalist and currently ranked World Number 1. He is also this year’s Malaysian Open and Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold champion.
In the finals, Chong Wei is set to face World Number 37 Muhd Hafiz Hashim who made an impressive outpacing of second-seeded Wong Choong Hann in the semi-finals, 21-19, 19-21, 21-18, and Kuah Beng Hong in the quarter-finals, 21-9, 21-14.
In the women’s singles, Wong Mew Choo secured her post in the finals after pounding Stephanie Shalini Sukumaran in the semi-final match, 21-9, 21-14. Before that, Mew Choo has already thumped Yang Li Lian in the quarter-final match, 19-21, 22-10, 21-9.
Mew Choo will play against another top seed player, Lydia Cheah Li Ya, who defeated Sonia Cheah Su Ya in the other semi-final match, 22-20, 21-16.
In the men’s doubles, the World No. 13 duo of Choong Tan Fourke and Lee Wan Wah will play against the tandem of Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng in the final match.
In the women’s doubles, the pair of Chong Sook Chin and Woon Khe Wei will battle with World No. 1 pair Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty in the finals.
