Lack of Roof Assessment Led to Roof Fall and Injuring a Worker Severally

Christopher Carson, an employee of Robert A. S. Crockett & Partners Ltd. was fitting a lighting system at Dundee Cold Stores Ltd. Kingsway West, Dundee when he suffered the accident.
On October 3rd, 2008 Mr. Carson was was at Dundee Cold Stores, Kingsway West, Dundee to install a security system. He was attaching cables to the wall of the building, but realized that the cable was on the roof. He climbed onto the roof to get the cable using the mobile platform system. On his way down to the platform, as he stepped on a roof light, he fell six and a half meters down onto the concrete ground, and got injured. There also was a lot of machinery lying around on the ground.
Mr. Carson was had to undergo a surgery to attach three of his tendons and despite the physiotherapy still suffers from severe back pain problems. The recovery is slow.
In the accident, he had fractures in his back and suffered fractures in his lower left shoulder and also dislocated his shoulder. There was a drill bit in his pocket and when he fell that added to a wound in his back.
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated this case and found that the accident was due to severe negligence on part of all the three companies as there had been no risk assessment done prior to the assignment. In addition, neither Robert A. S. Crockett & Partners Ltd nor Security Systems – Electroguard had provided any guidelines as to how the work was to be done safely.
All the three companies Robert A. S. Crockett & Partners Ltd., Security Systems – Electroguard and Dundee Cold Stores, Kingsway West, Dundee were find a total sum of £336,000 for the accident caused due to their negligence and for not having done a proper risk assessment prior to the commencement of the project.
